I went on yet another internet-surfing-binge tonight (this morning) and I came across this stuff that the director of 500 Days said (the whole paragraph under "Direction") regarding "MPDG" and it intrigued me. Made me think about the ex. I remember when I first saw (500) Days of Summer I felt... really weird about it. I felt like I was watching my old relationship through my old boyfriend's eyes. While I certainly don't think I'm perfect (as that is part of the director's MPDG definition), I think HE had a dreamed-up vision of me like that- not taking into account my "complexity". Before (500) Days existed, he compared me to Natalie Portman's character in Garden State, so it kind of came full circle when I read that second article. But bear in mind I haven't seen Garden State OR the mentioned Elizabethtown- in case I sound like an idiot right now.
Sorry, I just like to analyze my relationship/ex every once in a while, but this time it went hand-in-hand with a really perceptive idea that I appreciated from the director of that movie- and wanted to talk about it. The idea being- what I got out of it- that Summer is just Tom's perception of a woman and her MPDGness isn't necessarily REAL. Neither character is the villain and neither is the victor, because the situation and results are due in large part to a misunderstanding of each others' kind and... a million other things. Just like in real life. Not as many villains as there are just sad misunderstandings and miscalculations. Maybe it's because he was "immature" or maybe it was because he was human.
