Cool definition.

“People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that's what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life.

A true soul mate is probably the most important person you'll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave.

A soul mates purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life, then introduce you to your spiritual master...”

― Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

I don't know how she decided that this was the fact of the matter regarding soul mates, but 1) I believe her and 2) I already met my soul mate and I'm glad that chump is in my past. Grr. Still trying to mend myself from all those shakes and tears and addictions and breakage.

  1. Ash,

Thank you for this quote. I've never thought of it this way. I'm glad my soul mate's in the past for me as well. Here's to letting new light in. I just hope I'm not too stubborn in my skepticism to not recognize that light. Haha.

  2. I don't about this quote. I believe some of it but not all of it. The only reason why I don't like it is because its from Eat, Pray, Love. I have never read the book but I watched the movie and I hated it! Most importantly, I hated her. I hate her because she left her husband for no good reason. She left him, slept with a younger guy and when her husband tried to work things out with her she blew him off. He was a good person and she was just bored. What kind of woman does that? I don't like this lady at all and I think all the praise that she receives is dumb. They are praising her for being bored with her life and instead of dealing with it she runs away like a coward. I'm sorry if you're a fan of this lady. I just thought I would share my opinion with you cause we are friends.

  3. Vickie, you're basing your opinion of a real person- on a film adaptation. I'm not saying she's an incredible, moral human being all the time or that I support all her opinions and choices- but I can say that I learned a lot for MYSELF, from what she has written. She doesn't have to be perfect to be able to know and write inspiring things. Largely, I think I just identify with her a lot throughout her books. That's my feeling on the matter. Maybe if you read the book you'd find the same thing, or maybe you wouldn't. But I'm sure you have read something that really spoke to you.
